Play On: Marching Band

by Andre Dang '26

The Marching Band at Delone Catholic is a wonderful activity for students in high school and middle school who want to participate in a music program. Its presence is felt first at the Bonfire and afterward at most of Delone’s football games and other exhibitions.

It is a unique combination of music from different genres and themes, and marching movements. In other words, it is a showcase of audio and visual flair. This is no mere showcase, as there are numerous benefits to be had if one participates in it. In the band, one will find physical exercise, emotional struggles and joys, and perhaps even spiritual growth.

Drummer Timothy Martz states, “It’s a lot of work, but it’s really fun.”

If one chooses to play an instrument in the Marching Band, one automatically gains the benefits of playing an instrument, that is, improved coordination of muscles and sharpening of the intellect. There are many instruments to choose from, such as wind instruments, percussion, guitar, and keyboard. The Marching Band is certainly an activity well worth joining.

However, since 2020, they have had fewer than twenty members.

“We currently have nine members total,” notes Timothy Martz.

This lack of members increases the stress and responsibility of each member. For instance, some members of the band play more than one instrument. Additionally, with six marchers, they are limited in the formations they can do.

Although this problem has not forced the Marching Band to cancel a season, Tim Martz encourages individuals who are interested to join. “Hopefully, the band will start to build back up in the next couple of years.”
