From Pedals to Pipes: Mastering the Organ

 by Tim Martz ‘26

Looking for a part-time job as a high school student, church music probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. That said, it’s been one of the most incredible opportunities of my high school experience, for a few reasons. First of all, I’m an aspiring musician, and I need to stay consistent in practicing piano/organ. Thanks to my role as an organist, I can keep my musical skills sharp and earn some extra cash. As an upcoming college student planning to minor in sacred music, my job has prepared me not just musically, but also practically and spiritually.

Church musicians gain a lot of logistical experience for the workforce. Organists send emails regularly to figure out music, schedule rehearsal times, and build connections with local parishes. Organization, collaboration, and flexibility are key skills for an enterprising organist. Although the creative side of my work gives great experience for a musician, the practical side of it can be applied to a wide range of “normal” jobs.

My spiritual life plays a vital role in music ministry. Essentially, the role of an organist during liturgy is to lead the people in worship. This is a broad job description that accounts for a lot of changing factors. For example, sometimes I’m asked to use strictly traditional hymns, and other times I’m asked to include modern praise and worship music. Either way, if I’m using my talents in a way that can support the congregation in worship and bring them closer to God, then I’m on the right track.

As an organist, I get to play a beautiful instrument several times a month. I get to work with creative, holy people, and I get to use my talents to glorify God. All things considered, my job is amazing. I’m grateful to all of the people who have shaped me as an organist, musically and personally. That includes Mr. Tom Scheivert, my organ teacher, Fr. Lyons, my “boss” who has supported me in making music at his parish (Annunciation Parish in McSherrystown), and the entire music ministry at Annunciation for making me feel at home. It’s truly a blessing to be an organist at Annunciation.
