NAHS: Redefining Honor Societies

by Christian Powell

Delone Catholic’s National Art Honor Society is lesser known than other honor societies, and in fact is currently composed of only three members, all of which are seniors: Samantha Dolecki, Olivia Hartlaub, and myself.

Dolecki, NAHS co-president and member of National Honor Society explained the apparent differences in the structure between NAHS and other larger societies such as NHS.

I believe this difference in structured events and meetings is because there are more members, whether they be students or faculty, and structure is needed.”

It is important to note the size of NHS in comparison to the three members of NAHS. However, NAHS is also more selective to its members, limited only to the visual arts.

“And it’s such a bigger society because there’s always going to be more people in that versus NAHS because it’s more selective to art.”

Other members of NHS hold some similar views, such as Christina Richardson.

“I think NEHS can be defined as an honor society, because it contributes to the community and it’s a recognized affiliation.”

However, it is important to recognize that NAHS is beyond just a convenient source for polo logos and poster designs. Samantha Dolecki seems to disagree only slightly.

“I don’t think the society is just for production because it exists outside of Delone and other schools. Having said that, there is a demand for these types of jobs that are difficult to complete because of only having three members.”

The club contributed to homecoming and prom decorations, as well as the musical.

But, despite what this says about the contributions NAHS makes to the school community, it can be said that we make more contributions to the community outside of Delone.

As Dolecki stated, “We participated in the Gettysburg Outlets Christmas Card Contest. Outside of the community, we have participated in the Memory Project, where we drew Haitian children around our age and sent them the portraits.

While NAHS often can be a forgotten organization, it’s still an integral part in the functioning of Delone and still holds its ground as an honor society.
