Science Club: No Strangers to Competition
by Kevin Hao
While the DCHS Science Club may be one of the newer clubs on campus, members always seem seasoned when attending the Science Olympiad each year at Millersville University.
The Science Club meets every activity period with Mrs. Marrocco, who moderates the club and serves at the Science Department Chairperson. The club also had student leadership including President and senior Sophia Gilbart and Vice President and senior Samantha Mariano. These student leaders assisted with making registration arrangements for competitions, as well as ensuring club members were on schedule with preparation for events.
“The Science Club allowed me to test my critical thinking skills, and to experiment with new ideas.” said Jared Kidd, a former member of Science Club.
Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education.
DCHS Science Club prepares and participates in the Science Olympiad. Boomilever, a cantilevered wood structure, Mousetrap Vehicle, and Experimental Design are among the projects that the DCHS Science Club creates and uses in competition. It will often take members three or four month to prepare for the competition.
The Olympiad saw 31 teams compete this year. The Delone Catholic participants had four top 10 competition finishes including in the areas of Anatomy and Physiology, Dynamic Planet, Fossils, and Write It Do It.
“There is always something new to try,” said senior Alex Guy. “It’s really about thinking ‘how can I apply the information I have been studying’.”
